National Convention of school counselors

Prevention and management of mental health problems in school children

Mental health is not just something to be considered by counselors or psychologists or psychiatrists..

In school it is the responsibility of all the stakeholders to be aware of certain red flags about mental health..

The way a child deal with different emotional situations tell a lot about any child’s mental health..

In this national Convention Dr. V. S. Ravindran talked about all those times where we need to be aware, we need to be mindful about spuring mental health issues in adolescents and children.

How every school should take developmental measure, preventive measures rather remediation of problem situation..

Every school should already have a plan on sexuality education, on relationship management, on stress management, on anxiety and all other important topics which might if not developed properly may come as a problem.

Talk about everything which is required.

Talk about suicide if need be..

Talk about depression..

Talk about failures

Tell them it’s ok to not always win.

Talk about health

Talk about mental health

As school counselors be available for everything any child has to say.

Be available to talk

Be available to listen to what they have to say..

You will be able to prevent much more than you could ever think of.

  1. More improvements definitely need to be made although I have to say that things are headed in the right right direction. When I was in school seeing a school psychologist was almost unheard of. When my daughter was in school and she was having some trouble I arranged for her to have some visits with the school psychologist and it really helped her. Still there needs to be a lot more that happens in the actual classroom to teach social and psychological skills.
